Child Abuse for Patrol (1 day)

Working child abuse cases can be complex and an emotional job that not only has to be worked by children services, advocacies, public and private agencies, criminal investigators, and especially patrol officers. Due to several reasons, all of the professions tend to focus only on their job duties and are not familiar with the entire subject matter. Patrol officers are usually trained differently than the others. Patrol officers are usually told “Do not screw it up!” “Do not hurt the children any more than they already are.” Due to this, many if not most patrol officers are quick to pass these cases off to their investigators or social services before knowing if there was actually abuse occurring. Most patrol trainings consisting of child abuse issues are usually minimum, and our officers are constantly told to not “screw it up”. Many of these officers actually believe they are going to re-hurt the child. This is the main reason our officers will contact an investigator before arriving on a scene.
